We provide low income homeowners with materials to rehabilitate their homes to meet safe and decent standards at a fraction of market cost.  A place to donate used and unused building materials that might otherwise end up in a dump or incinerator.

Some shelters are open to anyone, while others have requirements such as being for persons who are experiencing domestic violence, mental illness, or substance abuse, or who are teenagers (some only open to teens who are pregnant) or who are women. Contact an Information and Referral source or MSHA for your area to get information on nearby shelters.

Co-housing is a village-based and community-oriented housing design which includes separate dwellings for individuals, as well as common buildings and areas.  The approach originated in Scandinavia, and has caught on in various parts of the US.  Two Echo is currently the only active co-housing project in Maine to the development state.  As of Spring 2001, 18 of 27 available households are constructed and lived in.  70 of 92 acres are held in conservation easement.  A national website for co-housing resources is www.cohousing.org.
